Ogoh-ogoh

A massive community ritual in three parts: purge your fears to this year’s ogoh-ogoh, a totem-like sculpture crafted by Balinese artists Ida Bagus Oka, Ida Bagus Antara, and Komang Sedana Putra. Then, join the procession to the Regatta Grounds, where our ogoh-ogoh—and our fears with it—shall be commended to the flames.

    Ogoh-ogoh: The Purging

Visitors walk beneath a large, suspended brown skate sculpture in a dark, atmospheric room with hanging red-hued objects and soft fog.

Commit your fears to paper and release them to the belly of a Pedra Branca skink. Found only on a tiny, windswept island off Tasmania’s south coast, the endangered lizard is this year’s ogoh-ogoh: a totem-like sculpture derived from a Balinese Hindu purification ritual and crafted by Balinese artists.

    Ogoh-ogoh: The Procession

A large, illuminated skate ogoh is carried in a crowded outdoor procession, decorated with red string lights and dark trees.

Make some noise as we parade our skink-shaped ogoh-ogoh from Franklin Square to the Regatta Grounds before its final, fiery passage.
